Sound Signal Devices
(Rule 33)
  • Vessels 12 meters (39.4 feet) or more shall carry a power whistle or power horn and a bell.

  • Vessels less than 12 meters (39.4 feet) shall carry a “means of making an efficient sound signal.”

  • Short Blast - a blast of about 1 second

How to Remember Sound Signals
  • Leave the other boat
    on your port side
                   = 1 short blast
  • Leave the other boat on your starboard side  
                 = 2 short blasts

Maneuvering and Warning Signals (Rule 34)
  • A power-driven vessel in sight of another and when maneuvering as required by these rules, shall indicate the maneuver by sound signals.
  • Another vessel which hears the signal shall sound the same signal, if in agreement.

  • Power-driven vessel making way - 1 prolonged blast
  • Power-driven vessel underway but stopped and not making way (drifting) - 2 prolonged blasts

    • not under command
    • restricted in ability to maneuver
    • engaged in fishing
    • towing or pushing another

    • ring a bell for 5 seconds at least every 1 minute

  • Does not apply to vessels less than 12 meters anchored in a designated anchorage

Signals in Restricted Visibility
(Rule 35)
  • A vessel less than 12 meters is not obliged to give these restricted visibility signals but shall make some other efficient sound signal at least every 2 minutes.

Signals to Attract Attention
(Rule 36)
  • If necessary to attract attention of another vessel, sound or light signals may be made that cannot be mistaken for signals authorized by these rules.

  • When a vessel is in distress and requires assistance she shall use or exhibit the signals in Annex IV of the rules.

    2 syllables = 2 short blasts
  •  “I intend to leave
    you to my port side”
    1 syllable = 1 short blast
